Gramin Shiksha Kendra was established as a Society in 1996, in response to a rural community-led demand for education in Sawai Madhopur. In the region for the last 25 years, GSK works to enhance access to quality child-centric education in villages across rural Ranthambore. To that end, we run three schools, awarded the status of ‘Change-maker Schools’ by the Ashoka Foundation- the Uday Community Schools, at Jaganpura, Girirajpura and Fariya. These serve close to 400 children aged 6 years to 13 years from some of the most marginalised and neglected communities.
In 2011, an extension programme was established- Vistaar, to partner with and support government schools in our catchment areas- to equip them in child-centred, participatory and engaging teaching practices, in an attempt to reform the education ecosystem and make it more qualitative. GSK has reached about 500 teachers and over 10,000 children through Uday-Vistaar.
Additionally, other projects include programmes for early childhood care and education (Tarang- for children aged 3-5 years), the enhancement of agency of adolescent girls (Umang), and gainful engagement with De-notified and Nomadic Tribal communities of Sawai Madhopur.
